Nicknamed the Pearl of the Danube for its beaux-arts buildings and thermal bathhouses, Budapest seamlessly blends old-world charm and modern glamour. A short funicular ride takes you up the hill to Buda’s Old Town district, where you’ll find the stately Royal Palace, a bevy of museums and medieval homes along its cobbled streets. Down below is the flat Pest portion of the city, featuring the statues of Heroes’ Square, an incredibly ornate Opera House and the modern shops of Andrassy Avenue. With its compact city centre near the cruise terminal, Budapest is a pleasure to explore on foot!
If you see nothing else in Budapest, you need to get to the historic Castle District. It’s located on the hilly Buda side of the city, featuring charming courtyards and a warren of cobbled streets to wander around. Admire views of the city from the top, tour the Royal Palace, or venture inside the 700-year-old Matthias Church. Apart from this district, Andrassy Avenue is another must-see attraction due to its grandeur. It’s lined with garden-bedecked villas, designer shops and open-air cafes in Franz Liszt and Heroes’ Square. The Jewish Quarter is one of Europe’s largest, capped with the massive Great Synagogue.
The main cruise terminal is positioned a stone’s throw from Budapest’s city centre, making it simply to get in and out. Budapest is a very pedestrian-friendly city, with many sights easily reachable with a twenty-minute walk from the docks. The Metro is well worth a visit as an attraction all in itself, being one of the oldest in the world. You can still see some original tile work dating back to the late 1800s in the yellow M1 line tunnels! Alternately, travel around Budapest by tram to enjoy the above-ground view. If you prefer, taxi ranks are available at the terminal for a quick journey to your destination.
Budapest Port is a major trading station as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it offers all the facilities you’d expect including adequate parking facilities. There’s space for up to 100 lorries in the outdoor parking lot, along with secure garages for cars. Choose from a trio of official car parks within walking distance of the main river port, including options EZ Hollo, EZ Opera Port and EZ Szekely Port. These all feature undercover parking with CCTV security cameras and 24-hour access. Prices are charged by the hour, day, or for longer term stays.

One of the city’s nicknames is the ‘City of Springs’ due to the 118 hot springs that provide water to its spas. Perhaps the most famous thermal bath complex is Szechenyi, featuring indoor and outdoor pools, floating game boards, massage treatments, and a relaxed atmosphere for socialising with friends.
For shopping, venture to Vaci Utca to find big-name European shops as well as folk art boutiques, designer wares and fine jewellery. The covered Great Market Hall ‘Nagycsarnok’ is another hotspot for souvenirs – be sure to pick up some authentic Hungarian paprika to spice up your home cooking!
Budapest’s café culture is legendary, and you can explore the bohemian atmosphere of past decades in timeworn gathering places like the Gerbaud House. Here you’ll be served rich chocolate tortes and strong coffee under crystal chandeliers and marble-accented ceilings. There’s also a microbrewery onsite if you prefer a different type of brew.
If you’re after a moment of serenity during your time in Budapest, you can venture to Margaret Island. This island sits in the middle of the Danube, a long strip of land dotted with biking and walking trails, flowers and wildlife.
